Fire Detection Systems
A fire detection system is installed to alert occupants to the presence of a fire. Some fires can begin as smouldering fires that produce smoke and gases but don't generate enough heat to activate the sprinklers. Fire detection is needed to provide warning for these situations.
Nurse Call
Nurse call systems are used to raise an alarm indicating that a patient is in need of assistance. Push buttons and pull stations are installed at beds, in bathrooms, and more. Patients then activate the system, providing visible and audible indication on which patient is in need. The nurse can attend to the patient and request further help if necessary.
Access Control
Access Control would be done through the registration and authorization of access cards, tags, pin codes or biometrics at a system reader. The system will then allow entrance or exit permissions based on a system with approved credentials.

Servicing
Ensure that your systems are functioning 100% correctly, 100% of the time.

It is essential that fire detection systems are subject to periodic inspection and servicing so that unrevealed faults are identified, preventive measures can be taken to ensure the continued reliability of the system, false alarm problems are identified and suitably addressed, and that the user is made aware of any changes to the building that affect the protection afforded by the system.

Periodic inspection and servicing need to be carried out by a competent company with specialist knowledge of fire detection and alarm systems, including knowledge of the causes of false alarms, sufficient information regarding the system, and adequate access to spares.

Ensure that regular servicing is requested upon installation of your fire detection system, or a service contract is established to ensure that your system is inspected regularly.

FAQ

Is there a document or guidelines for the installation and procedures regarding fire detection systems?

Yes. SANS10139 is the South African National Standard for fire detection systems, including: system design, installation and servicing.

Where do I start if I need a fire detection or other electronic security system?

Fill in the form to the right and we will contact you to set up an appointment to inspect your premises with you. Once this has been done, we will be able to accurately quote on what is necessary according to legal requirements and your site specifics.

Do I legally need to have a fire detection system installed?

Yes. According to SANS10139:

“In general, it is appropriate to install some form of fire alarm system in virtually all buildings, other than very small premises that are relatively open-planned so that any fire will be quickly detected by occupants, who will be able to warn others by word of mouth or simple mechanical devices such as hand operated bells.” (SANS10139, 2012)

Does my fire detection system need to be serviced?

Yes. According to SANS10139:

“It is essential that the system is subject to periodic inspection and servicing so that unrevealed faults are identified, preventive measures can be taken to ensure the continued reliability of the system, false alarm problems are identified and suitably addressed, and that the user is made aware of any changes to the building that affect the protection afforded by the system.

Periodic inspection and servicing need to be carried out by a competent person with specialist knowledge of fire detection and alarm systems, including knowledge of the causes of false alarms, sufficient information regarding the system, and adequate access to spares.” (SANS10139, 2012)

Do I need a large budget to have a fire detection system?

No. Different categories of system can be quoted on, allowing you to decide on options for legally compliant fire detection systems at manageable prices.

I think I have a fire detection system installed, how can I be sure?

Walk through your premises and look for a fire detection panel (usually installed in a utility cupboard, or around a security desk), smoke detectors (mounted on ceilings), or manual call points (small red manually activated boxes mounted on walls close to external doors).

If you need help identifying your fire detection system, fill in the form on the right and Minerva Technologies will be able to assist.
